John Mayer as a guinea pig for Blu Ray 7.1 audio?

I’m trying to find out if 7.1 is worth it for me to spend the extra $. As an example, if I were to pop in John Mayer’s “Where the light is” Blu Ray video and play via a 7.1 surround sound system and then compare to a 5.1 system, would I notice a major difference? Should I anticipate many more artists releasing videos with this audio format encoding?

Discrete 7.1 audio is fairly rare right now, but will probably become somewhat more common with time. That said, I don’t see it ever becoming common. Furthermore, unless you have a fairly big room you won’t get much benefit from 7.1 vs 6.1 or 5.1 sound.

However, how you perceive audio may be quite different than how I (or anyone else) perceive(s) it. In reality large increases in cost are associated with relatively incremental improvements in sound, and most of us look for a balance between performance/quality and cost.

I recently upgraded my sound system to take advantage of “lossless” audio formats (and to be able to get discrete 7.1 sound), and while I can hear improvements (from the relatively few disks that support it) the difference is fairly subtle. So, will you hear “a major difference?”, most likely not … but what seems incremental or subtle to me may be major for you.

I suggest you try to find a store with a demo room capable of playing your example disk in 7.1 (or a friend with a good sound system) and judge for yourself. Anything else, including my input, is simply another person’s opinion.
